Illusion Of Safety
IMPRESSION
Illusion Of Safety intrepidly charts the terra incognita where sound, silence, noise and music intersect. Using conventional instruments, sound generating devices and random objects, IOS hews sonic sculptures that deliberately provoke, mesmerize and even affront listeners.
OVERVIEW
Illusion Of Safety has been the ongoing project of Dan Burke since 1983, working with numerous individuals in various combinations of one to 10 members. Their work has been continually evolving, never settling into an easy niche. Each collaborator has brought their own unique perspective to the project. Since 1991 IOS have released 20 CDs on labels such as Die Stadt, Silent, OddSize, Staalplaat, Soleilmoon, Manifold, Tesco, Ossosnossos, and Complacency. At times their work has been called ambient, post-industrial, electro-acoustic, electronica, noise, sound collage, improvisation, and power electronics. Unable to categorize their work into one style, each release, live performance, and sometimes individual piece often shifts abruptly from one atmosphere to another.
CURRENT POSITION
Dan Burke working with electronic synthesis, computer composition & manipulation, musical reference, and close microphone searching hands. Referencing external & enhancing internal locations, manipulating semi-recognizable elements in structures of a re-arranged language of error. Destroyed music, broken sound, disturbed ambience and the quest for the sublime.
DAN BURKE'S ARTIST STATEMENT:
The work represents not only my internal world but the world as I perceive it. I work toward truth and often use brutal honesty in mirroring my own state of mind and what I experience of society & civilization. The work represents my interest in the duality, contradictions, and ironies of the world we live in, the human condition and my own state of mind. I explore my fascination with the necessities of balance and the nature of dichotomy: chaos vs. tranquility, sacred vs. profane, subtleties vs. obviousness, and the ugly vs. an all pervasive beauty. My hope is that other people can relate to the work on an emotonal, and intuitve level, while appreciating my aesthetic interest in exploring the inneffible. To illiustrate & illuminate psychological processes and personal/interpersonal relationship. To activate modes of perception to facilitate direct access of the psyche, emotion, and the infinite
transcendence.

ONDE
----------
ONDE was founded in October 2006.
The core members of ONDE (Timo Van Luijk, Marc Wroblewski and Greg Jacobs) are all former members of the now defunct Noise-Maker’s Fifes.
Timo Van Luijk has been active as a musician in different projects: Asra with Raymond Dijkstra, In camera with Christoph Heemann, with Kris Vanderstraeten, No Neck Blues Band and Noise-Maker’s Fifes. Besides that he has played with Mirror and has released several solo releases as Af Ursin.
Greg Jacobs and Marc Wroblewski have been involved during years with Noise-Makers Fifes. Noise-Maker’s Fifes – often labelled as an isolationist band - has gained during their twenty years of existence a strong reputation as a live band. With the death of founding member Geert Feytons, Noise-Maker’s Fifes was buried, and ONDE created.
Whereas Noise-Maker’s Fifes often experimented with multi media, ONDE is a pure musicians collective, were improvisation takes a central role. ONDE could be labelled as a “free musicians collective”, where the musicians can play whatever they want, whenever they want.
Although no rules, conventions or limits are imposed, the music ONDE produces could be clearly labelled as experimental, and ranging from psychedelic to drone music, sometimes even minimal, with regular outbursts of pure noise. As with all improvisational music, the direction of the music will be guided by the energy of the moment itself, and will therefore be by definition unpredictable.
ONDE uses acoustic (sometimes prepared) as well as electronic and self-made instruments.
Their first album (LP only) has been released in November 2007: ”the debut from the post noise-maker’s fifes aggregate of greg jacobs, timo van luijk, and marc wroblewski ... gorgeous group-mind drone-work, ranging from subtle organ/guitar interpla) to full-on, harsh electronic wail. impeccably presented in the same manner as recent la scie dorée / le souffler releases. highly recommended.” (Mimaroglu records)
ONDE will be:
Greg Jacobs (B): violin, electronics, strings
Marc Wroblewski (B): strings, metal
Timo Van Luijk (B): trumpet, guitar, tape feedback
