NINA HAGEN Special - feat. DJ HOT GANDHI
"This is Radio Erevan, my name is Hans Ivanovich Hagen, and this is the news" is the way to start a song that warrants immediate appreciation from anyone born on the post-soviet territory. "Antiworld", with its Andrei Voznesensky references ("Mr. Bukashkin is my neighbour / His face is grey like "Pravda" paper"), aims at the same soft spot. Ah, these communist jokes, they never grow lame. Apparently, Nina was a refugee from the East Germany, so her taking the piss off the good old Soviet Union (we're still watching you, mind you!) is understandable. But "Nunsexmonkrock" has more to offer than just wry humour. It is an exponent of space-punk in its prime, and sometimes delves into the territories explored by Tuxedomoon (think "Victims Of The Dance") and even Gong, with Nina's voice reminding Gilli Smyth quite a lot. |
