NIL DESPERANDUM #80
Liebe Connaisseusen, beste Freund_innen (der Nacht, nicht der Macht), geschätzte Brüdern & Schwestern & Changierende,
unglaublich, aber gar: NIL DESPERANDUM feiert diesen Samstag ihre 80ste (in Worten: achz-igs-the) Ausgabe! Yippieyeah!
„don_t go are Nina Jukić (vocals, piano, synths) and Alexander Forstner (drums, guitar, electronics). Their truly unique music is a delicate balance between melancholy and catchy grooves, between intensity and softness. It transcends genres and sends you off on a cathartic journey through imaginative sonic landscapes, while at the same time making your body move. Nina’s extraordinary, warm vocals reveal a deep emotional authenticity and draw the listener into her inner world, while Alexander’s exploratory spirit brings the most out of being both the guitarist and the drummer of the band.
Live looping is the fundamental principle of don_t go’s impressive live performances. They want to explore the possibilities and limitations of their set-up as a duo, so they do not use a laptop on stage. This nevertheless results in exciting and surprisingly rich textures of complex, interweaving vocal and instrumental layers.
don_t go started making music together in 2013, after moving to Vienna from their hometowns of Zagreb and Graz. Since then, they have played at numerous concerts and festivals. Their debut EP Dark Country (listen here: [https://dontgo.bandcamp.com/releases]) was released in 2016. Currently they are working on their first LP. In the meantime, they also got married.“
Soviel zur Band in den Worten des „Austria Music Export“, lesen Sie nun – call it International Music Einfuhr - dieselbe höchstelbst und in Beantwortung des berüchigen NIL DESPERANDUM 10-Frage-Bogens:
01) Who are you & where do you come from?
NINA: I live in Vienna, I come from Zagreb, but, ideologically, I consider myself first and foremost an Earthling. Music-wise, I come from a strange place where classical music education meets the love of pop, fat beats, sonic explorations and honest emotion. I gather influences from all sorts of musics. I do not believe in borders of any sort. They bore me.
ALEXANDER: I come from Austria. If there is one ideology I can get my head around it is the aim to question everything all the time.
02) How do you call your music?
NINA: Experimental, soulful, loop-based pop that hopefully touches your soul and makes you want to dance at the same time.
03) What does music do for you?
NINA: It makes me feel like home. Which feels like the most magical place in the universe where nothing else matters.
ALEXANDER: It keeps me busy, interested and wondering for years now.
04) What do you do for music?
NINA: Face my greatest fears and my biggest dreams.
ALEXANDER: Whatever it takes.
05) What's Vienna to you?
NINA: The coziest city. Sometimes I feel people take that for granted. Vienna just has everything. Well, except for the sea.
ALEXANDER: A sort of home.
06) What NIL DESPERANDUM?
NINA: One of the coolest concert series in one of the coolest clubs in town.
ALEXANDER: A nice way to get to know new music.
07) Wanna name your Top 5 favourite records?
NINA: Here are the five records that I listen to the most lately:
Nai Palm – Needle Paw – I could listen to this woman´s voice forever. Also, she´s such a brilliant songwriter and a badass on the guitar. This solo album of hers strips it all down to these most fundamental things, and it´s just smooth as butter. Perfect for evenings.
Solange – A Seat at the Table – Such a fantastic neosoul/r´n´b record, from beginning till the end. Love the production, the instrumentation, the sounds, Solange´s voice, everything. And Cranes in the Skyis one of the best songs I´ve heard in the last few years.
Kimbra – Primal Heart – I really respect Kimbra, her boldness, creativity, skill and expresiveness in live performance. I get a lot of inspiration from that. Her last record is a bit more electronic and straightforward than the previous ones. I think she´s one of the most underrated musicians today.
Lauryn Hill – The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill – I discovered this 1998 gem all over again just recently, and play it loudly when I just want to feel good.
Hiatus Kaiyote – Choose Your Weapon – since a friend first played it to me a few years ago, I´ve been hooked. It never gets boring. It is simply genius.
Angelo Badalamenti - Twin Peaks OST. - Contains exactly what I want from music. Drama, humour, seriouesness, ridiculousness.
Battles - Mirrored - The loops, the energy, the weirdness.
Madvillain – Madvillainy - Impeccable samples.
The Books - The Lemon of Pink - The Books tell weird little aleatoric stories with sound.
Charles Mingus - Pithecanthropus Erectus - Got this on tape decades ago, still remember from whom.
08) Can you name your favourite live-music-moment ever?
NINA: To name a just few that come to my mind – Eddie Vedder trying to speak Croatian during Pearl Jam´s first Zagreb concert in 2006. Me bursting out in tears during my first Radiohead concert in Prague in 2009, when they started playing There There. Being so close to Kimbra during her small gig in Bruxelles last year and completely blown away by her musicianship and stage presence. And any concert where I can watch a woman being a fantastic musician and performer. I am happy that there are more and more such opportunities.
ALEXANDER: I saw The Art Ensemble of Chicago at this year's Primavera Festival - one hour of free jazz madness. In the middle of the set a cable broke and there was a loud buzz coming over the PA. One after another almost every member of the band stopped playing and looked somewhat confused, wondering what was going on. The band leader and saxophonist could not care less about the whole situation and just kept on playing and playing, while tech people and stage hands were fixing the problem. And when the problem was solved and the buzzing disappeared, all the other musicians slowly got back into the improvisation... And this made so much sense. Musically. Ideologically. Just keep on keeping on. Always.
09) What do you need/want from your audience?
NINA: I am happiest when I see that people really listen, that they drift away and move their bodies to our music.
ALEXANDER: Nothing but approximately 45 mins of their time.
10) Wanna give out a contact where your fans can get in touch?
NINA & ALEXANDER: Yes! Please, do write us at firstname.lastname@example.org or on Facebook, we´d love that!
